Morning,

Now that opponents have had a chance to see and prepare for the Brisbane system - everybody in the team has to step up a gear. The speed and quality of the passing and movement has to go up another a notch. Perth and Adelaide might have come along like lambs for the slaughter, but other teams won't. Newcastle broke the Roar's passing rhythm very well when they played. But I think this team has room for improvement.

Danning could be part of that improvement - brings a very different skillset to most of his squadmates. Know anything about why Meyer flitters in and out of the squad? He knows where the goal is.

I am still not too sure what happened in the 2nd half when the Roar did improve. Was that the Roar imposing themselves, or was it that Heart stopped playing?

I really like Hingert but still not sure on Brattan. He's solid enough but I think Meyer offers more at this stage.

The unanswered question for me is who will fill in for Eric if he's ever not there? Perhaps Matt Smith with Adnan and Jurman at the back? Not sure why Ange has never given anyone else a run in that role even when we are 7-1, 4-0 etc up. Similarly why does he never give Broich an early mark when the result is assured - he was out on his feet against Perth, the most likely time to pick up an injury.

I'd guessed, with Jacob and Dawn, 4:1. I had given Shane Smelz too much credit. He was pretty useless.

Agree about Adnan. He is a candidate for a start when the rest of the team is back I reckon. Also great to see Issey with some confidence.

I would love to see over 20,000; it would be fantastic for the a-league!! With big crowds in Melbourne, New Zealand, Perth and to a lesser degree Newcastle and Adelaide, it would be fantastic if Brisbane could attract 20,000+ on a regular basis!

Interesting that you saw Massimo as the man of the match. I didn't think he underperformed, but I think that expectations for what he should be giving the team have gone up. Not expecting him to "do a McKay", but as well as providing the short option, pressing constantly, and passing and moving - he should also be shielding the ball and passing forward. More.He could be the X factor for the roar.

Good comments John. I was annoyed with myself for sleeping through the first half of the game. Got myself to the pub for the second.

Typical Roar taking half a game to get into their groove, but with a virtually untried back line and a second-string midfielder it's pretty understandable. The professionalism is that they figured things out and came back, again.

And credit to Newcastle. They play a very similar system. Even saw them playing out from the back under pressure. Their pressing game is only going to improve and by bringing it to Brisbane they just got the best training match for their system possible. They'll bring what they learned against us into every game hence, unlike Melbourne and Phoenix.

There were times I thought the Ref let them get away with too much, but blaming the ref for the result never crossed my mind.

The Roar now have a new tactical dilemma that needs to be solved.

Agree Issey is not there yet, but I haven't given up on him. Give 'em six months, Ange said (meaning Danning too), and I'll go with that.

Brattan seems to fit in well though.

Yep, Adnan was on the bench, no doubt as a defensive option, so ostensibly it is understandable that he wasn't used. But as I say he has been used as a target man before. He's an interesting option and I'm excited to see how he will be used as the season goes on.

I agree re-Adnan. Was he on the bench? I think they were giving Luke B a run - but he looked a little lost.

I don't really rate Issey, but when he came on he did offer something different - stepping, shooting from distance. In those type of situations you want players running into the box 'foul me or I will score.'

If this is what Brisbane can expect from games in the future, Ange will need another option. Can't get around, can't get under - need an option to go over.

Adnan might be a key. In the past apparently, for club and country, he is sometimes called to the front line as an extra attacking weapon. He could have come on replacing Smith for example. In one season I read he scored a goal every four games, either by being used as a target man late in the game, or in set pieces.

I'm not entirely convinced by Smith anyway, but maintaining a full back line (3) on the half way line was pretty indulgent by Ange - a bit gutless even, like he was the one making sure the Roar didn't lose, rather than trying to win. Scared of Thompson breaking the run, even with 11 v 9.
